Focusing on Women’s Health Month: Empowering You This Year
May is Women’s Health Month, and it’s never too early or too late to begin focusing on your health. Staying well while staying at home continues to be on everyone’s mind, even as much of the population plans to get their COVID-19 vaccinations by summer. As advocates for healthy, proactive patients of all ages, Pegalis Law Group, LLC is proud to shine the spotlight on ways women can feel empowered about making healthy lifestyle changes this year.
The Importance of Being Active: Try Exercise & Yoga Videos
Many of us have struggled to stay active in the wake of the pandemic and working from home the past year. If you’ve gained the “Quarantine 15” and then some, now is the perfect time to refocus on getting active and maintaining a healthier weight. There are numerous websites devoted to providing online exercise and yoga videos and classes, so you can keep active while continuing to social distance. A quick Google search should yield plenty of resources to help you get in better shape. As the weather continues to get nicer and more people get vaccinated, you should also start to feel more comfortable returning to the great outdoors. Try hitting some new trails at your nearest state parks or going for a family bike ride through your neighborhood. Whether you prefer to exercise alone or with someone else, explore new ways to keep yourself active this year: physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.
Eating More Fruits & Vegetables: Try Gardening Your Own
Nicer weather brings more fresh produce to your supermarket or local farmers’ market. This month is the best time to try incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. Fruits and vegetables that are especially beneficial to women’s health include broccoli, beets, kale, carrots, brussels sprouts, peas, blueberries, cherries, oranges, and bananas. Springtime is also a great time to begin gardening your own fruits and vegetables in your backyard. Gardening is not only a fun pastime for the entire family, but it’s also an excellent source of outdoor exercise. So, get out there and begin laying the groundwork for your garden. Get rid of all those weeds and plant those seeds!
Pay Attention to Your Mental Health: Take Time to De-Stress
Many women spend so much time worrying about taking care of everybody else around them that they forget to take care of themselves. Remember to take “me” time and de-stress to keep your mental health in check. You also shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. National studies show that women are less likely than men to seek treatment for anxiety or depression. However, not seeking help tends to make these issues worse over time. Make a commitment to put yourself first this year.
Get Preventative Checkups for Breast and Cervical Cancer
We cannot stress the importance of preventative checkups enough. Annual well-woman visits are essential to discuss any concerns you may have about your health. Other health screenings all women should keep up with include cholesterol, blood pressure, breast cancer, cervical cancer, osteoporosis, and sexually transmitted disease screenings. Check with your healthcare provider for more details about how often you should get these preventative health screenings. Be sure to also keep up with annual eye and dental exams and immunizations recommended for your age group.
